muesli bar disaster

so in an attempt to confirm that i do indeed possess some kind of baking ablitity , i decided i would like to make some tasty muesli (granola) bars for this upcoming tournament weekend. after mulling over several different recipe options, i chose one with the least amount ingredients, with the notion in mind that number of ingredients clearly correlated with difficulty level.

anyway, as the title implies, the result was a disaster. when i pulled the bars out of the oven, they looked on the outside toasty and delicious. however, one bite into the substance left you with a few bits of dried fruit and a powdery substance that just fell apart in your mouth; clearly my liquid binding mixture to dry mixture didn't quite make it to required ratio. although i would like to attribute this to the fact that the recipe was in metric units (mL and grams), and i've only ever baked with cups, thereby skewing my eye measurements (we don't own any measuring tools), i have a gut feeling that these results might speak to my capablities as a cook.

then again, i could aslo blame it on the fact that i neglected to put chocolate chips in the mixture, and everyone (me) knows that no chocolate --> disaster.

brief update

random thought: is it vain to post updates on my life thinking people will actually want to read them. even if the answer is yes, i'm still going to post them because i like rereading my old posts and rehashing certain events, but sometimes i feel as if i am writing for an audience other than myself, and maybe thats not the case....

anyway, much has happened since i posted last; nothing life changing, but lots of interesting events to report. firstly, monica came to london, and i think she enjoyed herself very much. she got to visit her distant relatives in the day time, and walked around some of the london sights with fergus and myself in the evening. of course, we took her to GBK for the best burgers ever. this GBK thing is fast becoming a mandotory stop on the 'catherine and fergus's tour of london', along with a few other of our favorite restaurants. for a midweek break, mon and i decided to take a quick 2-day trip across to amsterdam. what a pretty city! and even though we found the cakes to be quite useless, we did find the city very visually enthralling; the juxtaposition of a beautiful old world canal store house with a prostitute standing in its modern day glass door was just too strange!

my birthday was also last week. the thought of turning 24 was a little too much for me (i'm not sure why it seems so much worse than 23, but it does!), so i didn't want to make anything big out of my birthday. i thought, as a little fun birthday treat, we could go to wimbeldon for the evening. it was early in the tournament, so we were set up to see some great outer court games. unfortuantley, about 20 minutes after we arrived, the heavens opened, and all i got for my birthday was an outfit logged with about 20 litres of water!

last week was also fergus and i's first year anniversary. its hard for me to believe we've been dating a year...thats a long time, certainly my longest relationship. anyway, i wasn't big on anniversaries, and it was hazy when the 'actual' date was, so that landmark also kind of slipped by without any celebration.

didn't do anything for the 4th of july. yay patriotism!

also made some major progress at work. i've been working on the same programming files (for a concrete program) for a while now, and last week i finally got them working. actually, it wasn't really "major" progress, but because i had been stalled so long, it felt like a huge event to get actual resutls with the program! i also went THREE days without chocolate after lunch! i know this may seem like an everyday thing for some people, but for me, who has a HUGE sweet tooth and has only had one or two work days where i've gone without chocolate after lunch, going three days in a row was a big deal! what a healthy lifestyle i have!

and this past weekend, london seemed to host almost all the major sporting events in the world! i got to see the tour de france time trials on saturday (although, i must say, they were going too fast for me to actually get a good look at them), and the end of the wimbeldon finals on sunday. i'm glad federer won; although nadal has gorgeous arms, i'm not a fan of his snarl, and federer is just such a calm pleasant figure to watch playing tennis. there was also some major formula one racing event going on, but formula one racing isn't really my thing.

in terms of media updates: i finished watching the o.c., season 4. wow! i can't believe that show is over. granted, i thought it had deteriorated over the years, but i can't say i didn't enjoy this last season alot. also saw ocean's 13: not as good as as the others, but still loved it. and i'm also fallen back into one of my reading phases. i finally picked up the book 'the world according to garp', which i think everyone but me has read. i guess i always avoided it because the title put me off (sounded sci-fi/fantasy to me, and i don't really like reading that genre), but boy, was a wrong. i'm about half way through, and losing alot of sleep time because i keep extending my bed time to finish a chapter.

okay, that might not have been as 'brief' as i had intended. oh well.
