wow.
finished my first week of work. although it was only four days (thanks to a bank holiday monday) i am exhausted. apparently 'on-site engineering' really means construction. i even built a fence the other day! you have no idea how much work goes into building a concrete wall with a fence sticking out of it.
i'm working on the M50 southeastern motorway project, the second largest road project in ireland. the site itself is six miles long! and thats just the road part. they also have to take care of all the bridges and all the offshoot roads which have to be widened to accomadate the traffic that this motorway will bring into the area. and that means they have to knock all the residents existing walls and put up all these new walls. let me tell you, it is a lot of work.
the usual hours are from half seven to half five or even six. by the time i get home i have about enough energy to not fall asleep in the shower, then put some food in mouth and then collapse into bed and watch tv till 10 and then go to bed. i go to bed at 10! it is crazy. now those of you who know me will know i LOVE sleep and need loads of it, but apparently i am so far surviving on 7 hours instead of my usual 10.
anyway, the job is kind of fun. the people i'm working with are great fun, but the it gets stressful. the engineers have to drive around like mad, micromanaging loads of construction crews. they are never off their damn mobiles, ordering this, and checking up on that. and if anything goes wrong, the engineers go crazy because its their ass on the line. the other day, when they were digging up the ground to put the base of a wall in, one of our crews cut through an esb (electricity) cable that served south dublin. this was major chaos. esb was furious, even though (i dont think) it effected anybody's electricity. anyway, this disaster is still ongoing..somebodys job is probably on the line.
its nice to be outside working, but i dont think i'm made for this kind of work. i'll probably end up in an office, which is okay by me at this point.
