spring break '05
a great week, filled with lots of ultimate, drinking, lounging around, driving a poor-ass white mini-van, exploring the south, and other stuff. not so much sleep, however; i am still suffering from lack of sleep, despite my 12 hour sleep session last night.
the week (well, technically 10 days) started off with our overnight drive down to ATL. instead of the silver, gold, and pimped-out white mini-van options i had my eye on, i got to rent the saddest white mini-van ever. it didn't even have power locks. i guess i should be happy it had locks at all. but, despite all it was lacking, it was the coolest mini-van on the road, thanks to the cool passangers and the sweet music (such as Glory Days, by BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN..you morons!)
the ride down can be summarzied through this brief conversation clip:
eugune (talking to ben on cell-phone): the ride down was..eh...blehh....
kelsey: i believe the word you're looking for is AWESOME
that friday afternoon was rough...i was running off of 2 hours of sleep in the cramped/jail-cell back seat of the mini-van, where i would have died if it wasn't for bugles and mara. the tournament, terminus, was alright. it was great to get out and play on a real field, but man, we were awful. we couldn't even score a point on a really really bad team. this highlights the major drawbacks to not practicing outdoors. atleast we won 1 game.
the beachhouse, although 20 miles outside of any group of buildings you could call a town, was an amazing house (props to max for finding it). it had a large living room, which i believe is the key component of a great spring break. everybody can comfortably gather in the room, and therefore, you will automatically have social interaction, which when combined with fun people, and perhaps a keg, or 4, will equal good times. because of the weather and crazy high tide, beach activity was minimal. but we managed to occupy ourselves no problem with power hours, videos, never have i ever, most likely to, crazy people skinny-dipping in the freezing pool, analyzing spirit animals/modes of transporation and random other drinking games.
a couple of others and myself went into savannah for st. patricks day. i wasn't aware of it, but apparently savannah has the second largest st. patricks day celebration. i'd never been to the town, and was glad i saw it (because it is a gorgeous southern town), especially in its full party glory. river street was packed with mobs of drunken people, all dressed up in crazy green outfits and green necklace beads with flashing lights. there were outdoor concerts too. thank god we walked by one as they started to play sweet home alabama, because maya got to rock out, and it was amazing. jen who had wanted to go on some bungee thingy, settled for a mechanical bull ride instead. that shit is hard! and when you fall off, you get whipped off, hard!
and then, we moved on to statesboro for southerns. southerns has always been one of my favorite tournaments, and it lived up to its reputation this year again. great fields, great food (papa johns pizza!!) and great weather. our team certainly redeemed ourselves after terminus...we placed second in our pool, and then, in what turned out to be the best game, won our last game with an amazing comeback despite being mad tired. those hard fought wins are always the best.
we left statesboro with one last stop at IHOP. after protesting IHOP as our final dining spot, i (and some others) gave in. personally, i ended up enjoying my meal there, but still, in my mind, IHOP will always be a dirty horrible place to eat...somewhere along the line of dennys, and yet, i will always end up there.
our long drive home wasn't so bad until the later hours. i drove the first shift, and probably drove for something like 10 hours, but i wasnt tired until 2am...there was lots of little activities that seemed to keep me energized and wide awake. i suppose stops at midnight to watch the birthday girl, joni, shotgun a beer in a cold dark parking lot woke me up. and passing out tao's van with corey's ass in the window certainly has some kind of red bull effect. rating other people's music and fuming over the fact that people don't know who sing glory days also kept me alert. but once 2 am hit, though, i was done. depsite kelsey's advice to stay away from the middle seat of the mini-van, i refused to go back to the back row jail cell again. however, that fucking middle seat was useless..there was no feasable sleeping position besides on the floor (which i found out later stoops and his van actually resorted to).
so after getting about 2 hours of sleeping with my head in my hands, we got back yesterday morning at 5.30am. i finally crawled into bed at 6.30 am for a 1.5 hour snooze. got back up at 8am to return cars to paterson, nj. drove mini-van back (1), then took taxi (2) to the first nj transit train (3) to the second nj transit train (4) and then hopped on subway (5) to arrive home to bed. despite the several changes we had to make between modes of transporation, we probably only waited about 8 minutes total. not bad. and despite the fact that i was exhausted, for some reason (most likely, some mini-adreneline rushes from grad schools), i couldn't sleep solidly during the day before my 4pm class. instead i just waited it out, until 9pm and then crashed for 12 hours straight.
and that leaves me here, still tired. my body feels like a brick, and my mind is surely not all there yet. i'm hoping the senality was only a spring break phenomenon (i had some speaking/thinking/memory problems over break). but, spring break '05 was absolutely amazing. i'm not sure if its the best...last year was pretty awesome too, but it certainly ties. we'll see how it stands the test of time.
